About St Mary's
St Mary’s in Broadwater, Worthing, is an active Anglican parish church serving the local ecclesiastical parish within the Diocese of Chichester. Dedicated to Saint Mary, it forms part of a benefice that also includes Queen Street and St Stephen’s. The church is protected as a Grade I listed building.
A church existed here in Saxon times and was recorded in 1086. Surviving Saxon masonry includes a doorway beside the chancel and architectural fragments incorporated into the tower. The present structure originated around the middle of the 12th century, built mainly from Caen stone and flint in the Norman style. During the 13th century, the nave and chancel were enlarged, transepts added and the tower raised to about 60 feet. Subsidence led to its western arch being reshaped in Gothic form using earlier Norman stonework. Extensive restoration took place during the 19th century. The tower contains eight bells, including six recast in 1938, while a 1953 chancel window depicts John Wycliffe and preachers.
