About St Mary of the Angels
St Mary of the Angels is a Roman Catholic church in Worthing, West Sussex. Now an active parish within the Diocese of Arundel and Brighton and Worthing deanery, it is the oldest of Worthing’s four Roman Catholic churches and is protected as a Grade II listed building.
Built in 1864, the church was designed by Henry Clutton in a French Gothic Revival style, using red brick and Portland stone. Thomas Gaisford of Offington Hall purchased the site after allowing local Catholics to worship in his private chapel from 1859. Bishop Thomas Grant of Southwark formally opened the new church, which was Worthing’s first Catholic place of worship. Frederick Walters enlarged the building between 1897 and 1907, adding a baptistery and expanding the porch and sacristy. A bell tower rising 76 feet, topped by a small spire, is among its most prominent features.
