About English Martyrs
English Martyrs is a Roman Catholic church on Goring Way in Worthing, West Sussex. It remains in use as a parish of the Arundel and Brighton diocese, within Worthing deanery. Beside it stands a Grade II listed barn dating from the eighteenth century, now used as the church hall.
Local farmer George Jupp had the barn constructed in 1771. Derelict by 1937, it was acquired with nearby land and adapted for worship, with Mass celebrated by clergy from St Mary of the Angels. It became the parish church when the parish was established in 1952, before the present building took its place. A striking interior feature is Gary Bevans’s acrylic interpretation of Michelangelo’s ceiling frescoes in Rome. He painted it single-handedly on the vaulted wooden lining beneath the roof, working outside his regular employment from 1987 until 1993. The church also contains a western stained-glass window designed by Annie Goodman and fitted in 1990, alongside Irish coloured glazing at clerestory level.
