About St Botolph
St Botolph is an active Church of England parish church in the Heene area of Worthing, West Sussex. Completed in 1879 to serve Heene and the developing West Worthing estate, the church is now a Grade II listed building.
Christian worship in Heene dates from the 11th century. A later medieval chapel, administered from West Tarring, had fallen out of use by the late 17th century and was largely demolished during the 1700s. Its surviving ruins stand beside the present church. Designed by Brighton architect Edmund E. Scott in the Early English Gothic style, the current building includes an aisled nave, chancel, transept, and a western tower topped by a spire. The tower was completed in 1879 and fitted with eight bells made by John Warner and Sons. R. S. Hyde enlarged the southern aisle and transept between 1903 and 1905, while the northern aisle gained an extension and new entrance in 1982.
