About St Andrew

St Andrew is an active Church of England parish church serving Tarring in Worthing, West Sussex. With origins in a formerly rural parish connected to the Archbishop of Canterbury, it is now protected as a Grade II* listed building. Its prominent spire remains a local landmark.

A church stood here by the 11th century, probably built of timber, while the present flint and stone structure largely developed during the mid-13th century. The chancel and tower were reconstructed in the 15th century, when the surviving rood screen was also made. A substantial restoration in 1853–54 removed the west gallery, added a vestry, renewed the interior and replaced the organ. Four existing bells were recast to form a ring of six. Later additions include mosaics designed by William Butterfield and installed by Italian craftspeople in 1885.
