About St Nicolas
St Nicolas is a Church of England church in Old Shoreham, the historic inland settlement now within Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex. Standing beside the River Adur, it is protected as a Grade I listed building in recognition of its architectural and historic significance.
Founded around 900, the church may occupy the location of an earlier fifth-century place of worship. Parts of the Anglo-Saxon fabric survive, including thick nave walls and a sealed doorway. Extensive work around 1140 created the cross-shaped plan, replacing the earlier tower with the present Norman central tower and adding transepts, chapels and a new eastern end. Flint rubble forms the main structure, with stone detailing and a roof of Horsham stone slabs. The chancel was lengthened during the 14th century, while restoration in 1839–40 rebuilt the transepts and renewed many windows. Unusual medieval carvings beneath the tower include sombre human faces and figures of a cat and an elf.
