About St Julian's Church

St Julian’s Church is a Church of England parish church in Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex, serving the historic parish of Kingston Buci. The building is Grade I listed in recognition of its considerable architectural and historic significance.

A church stood here before the Norman Conquest, and parts of the nave date from the late Saxon period. The building largely assumed its present form in the 13th century, when the chancel, central tower, north aisle and south porch were constructed. Built of flint with stone detailing, it has a simple nave, tower and chancel arrangement without transepts. Surviving medieval features include a 14th-century chancel screen and traces of an anchorite’s cell, including its doorway and viewing opening. The interior also contains the Lewknor family tomb, box pews, an unusually large 18th-century pulpit with a separate reading desk, and an organ formerly housed at Brighton Aquarium. Nineteenth-century restoration renewed several windows and rebuilt the north aisle while retaining its earlier arches.
