About St Mary de Haura

St Mary de Haura is a Church of England parish church on Church Street, in the centre of Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex. Serving the central parish, it also hosts important services and community occasions for the wider town. The church is Grade I listed for its exceptional architectural and historic significance.

Founded by the de Braose family in the late 11th century to serve New Shoreham, the original building was an ambitious cruciform church reflecting the medieval port’s importance. Today’s structure consists of its surviving eastern section and retains substantial 12th-century fabric. From around the 1170s, the area beyond the nave was reconstructed as a lofty five-bay quire, with ribbed vaulting, aisles, a triforium and clerestory. Early flying buttresses were soon added to support the vaulted aisles. The medieval church reached its greatest extent by about 1225.
