About St. John's Chapel
St. John's Chapel is on St Johns Street in Chichester, West Sussex. This former Church of England place of worship has Grade I protection. It ceased regular use following its closure by the diocese in 1973, although it remains consecrated and occasional services are held. The Churches Conservation Trust now looks after the building, which also provides a setting for concerts and other musical performances.
A group of trustees established the chapel in 1812 through private funding, and it opened in 1813. James Elmes prepared the design, while John Haviland managed construction during Elmes’s illness. White brick was used for its long eight-sided form, which combines a predominantly Classical treatment with details influenced by Greek and Egyptian architecture. The interior was planned around Evangelical worship, placing particular emphasis on sermons. Its tall central pulpit allowed the preacher to remain visible and audible across the seating area. Construction cost £7,000.
