Chichester Cathedral stands in Chichester, West Sussex, and serves as the cathedral of the Church of England’s Bishop of Chichester. Dedicated to the Holy Trinity, it remains an active place of worship and holds Grade I listed status. Its prominent spire is England’s third highest and can be seen from the sea.
The cathedral was established in 1075 after the bishop’s seat transferred from Selsey, and it was consecrated in 1108. Its fabric combines Norman and Gothic architecture. Following a serious fire in 1187, extensive reconstruction included a stone-vaulted nave, with further medieval work adding the central tower, Lady Chapel and paired aisles. Distinctive features include a detached medieval belfry and two uncommon sculptures from the Middle Ages. The spire collapsed in 1861 after long-term subsidence weakened its supports; George Gilbert Scott rebuilt the tower and spire to the earlier design, completing the work within five years. The interior also contains modern stained glass, tapestries and sculpture.
