About Saint Bartholomews
Saint Bartholomews is a Church of England church in Wednesbury, West Midlands, within the Diocese of Lichfield. Incorporating surviving medieval fabric and alterations from several later periods, the church is protected as a Grade II listed building.
A church in Wednesbury is first documented in legal records from 1210–11, while the present structure was largely rebuilt around the end of the fifteenth century or beginning of the sixteenth. Constructed in dressed sandstone, it has an aisled nave with five-arched arcades, a clerestory and a lower chancel ending in a polygonal apse. Its western tower is crowned by a battlemented parapet and an eight-sided stone spire. Surviving features include a probable fourteenth-century tower arch, a pulpit dated 1611 and alabaster figures of Richard and Dorothy Parkes on a seventeenth-century tomb. Later work included eighteenth-century repairs, nineteenth-century enlargement and restoration, and transept repairs in 1902–03. Sixteen windows contain glass by Charles Eamer Kempe from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
