About Saint Paul's Church
Saint Paul's Church is an Anglican parish church serving Wood Green in Wednesbury, West Midlands. It belongs to the Church of England and falls within the Diocese of Lichfield’s Wednesbury Deanery. The building has Grade II listed status.
Construction was financed by the Elwell family, proprietors of Wednesbury Forge, and cost £5,000. Alfred Elwell laid the foundation stone on 1 May 1872, before the Bishop of Lichfield consecrated the finished church on 21 August 1874. Designed in the Decorated Gothic manner, it is formed from red sandstone and includes a chancel, clerestoried nave and aisles divided into three bays. The tower, spire and a ring of eight Loughborough-cast bells date from 1887. Inside are commemorative stained-glass windows, including one honouring workers who died during the First World War, alongside an 1888 font made with Caen stone and Irish marble and a memorial reredos dating to 1903.
