About Weoley Castle, St Gabriel
Weoley Castle, St Gabriel is an active Church of England parish church serving Weoley Castle in Birmingham, West Midlands. The parish was created in 1933 from areas previously belonging to the parishes of St Laurence, Northfield, and St Mary, Selly Oak.
James Goddington Ledsam donated the site, and Neville Chamberlain laid the foundation stone on 10 December 1933 while serving as Chancellor of the Exchequer. Bishop Ernest William Barnes consecrated the church on 30 June 1934. Edwin Francis Reynolds designed the building, although intended additions including a chancel, transepts and tower were never completed. Its historic organ was made by John Snetzler in 1777 and installed here in 1940 after previously standing in churches at Wednesbury and West Bromwich. A First World War memorial calvary from St John’s, Deritend, arrived in 1948.
