The Cathedral Church of Saint Philip stands on Colmore Row in Birmingham city centre. It is an Anglican cathedral, housing the episcopal seat for Birmingham, and was elevated to cathedral rank when the Birmingham diocese was created in 1905. Having begun life as a parish church, it is now listed at Grade I for its architectural and historic importance.
Building work began in 1711 under architect Thomas Archer, and the church was consecrated four years later. Its Italian-influenced Baroque design uses brick clad in stone, with a western tower crowned by a lead dome and slender lantern. Between 1884 and 1888, J. A. Chatwin replaced the small original apse with an expanded chancel. Air raids left the interior severely damaged in November 1940, followed by repairs completed in 1948. Stained glass created by Birmingham-born artist Edward Burne-Jones survived because it had been taken away for protection before the bombing.
