About The Parish Church of St John & St Peter
The Parish Church of St John & St Peter is an active Church of England parish church on Darnley Road in Ladywood, Birmingham. Serving local residents and other users, it also provides space for concerts and community events. The building is protected at Grade II.
Samuel Sanders Teulon designed the church, which was constructed from 1852 to 1854 as a mission established by St Martin in the Bull Ring. Its site, formerly called Ladywood Green, had been used for burials during the Great Plague in the seventeenth century. Lord Calthorpe placed the foundation stone in September 1852, and Henry Pepys, then Bishop of Worcester, consecrated the building in March 1854. J. A. Chatwin added a new chancel and further work in 1881. Extensive interior restoration and redevelopment took place from 1994 until 2005, creating a flexible, bright worship area. A two-manual Allen digital organ with 33 stops was fitted in 2008. The parish adopted its present name after St Peter’s, Spring Hill, closed in 2001.
