About St Stephen's Church
St Stephen’s Church stands on Serpentine Road in Selly Park, Birmingham, and serves as a parish church within the Church of England. The building is protected at Grade II and belongs to the denomination’s Conservative Evangelical tradition.
Construction took place in 1870–71 to designs by Martin & Chamberlain, who adopted a Decorated English Gothic style. Founded from St Mary’s in Selly Oak, the church was consecrated on 18 August 1871 and gained its own parish in 1892. It was later united with St Wulstan’s, Bournbrook, while the former church centre became the separate parish of Christ Church, Selly Park, in 2004. Henry Jones made the first organ, which was inaugurated in 1875. The church also has one chiming bell, weighing five hundredweight and cast by Barwell in 1870.
