About St Silas
St Silas is a Grade II listed church in Lozells, Birmingham, in the West Midlands. Built as a Church of England parish church, it is no longer used by its former Anglican congregation. The building was sold in 1985 and is now occupied by the Triumphant Church of God.
Lord Calthorpe laid the foundation stone in June 1852, with coins placed beneath it, and the Bishop of Worcester consecrated the church in January 1854. Its original interior had galleries over the transepts and across the nave’s western end. Stained glass was installed in the east window in 1867 to commemorate the first incumbent. During alterations overseen by J. A. Chatwin in 1881, the southern gallery was taken out, larger nave windows received glass by Camm Brothers, and the enlarged organ was moved from the west gallery to a position beside the chancel. Composer Albert Ketèlbey served as head chorister there in his youth.
