About St. Peter & St. Paul, Aston
St. Peter & St. Paul, Aston is an active Anglican parish church on Witton Lane, Birmingham. It stands between the A38(M) and Aston Villa’s ground, within the protected historic area surrounding Aston Hall. The church has Grade II* listed status.
Its origins probably reach back to the ninth century, when the earliest building is thought to have been made of timber. A masonry replacement was completed in 1120, and extensive work followed in about 1480. The present tower and spire date from that phase, though the spire underwent repairs in 1776–77. J. A. Chatwin directed a further reordering in 1879. Inside are medieval chest tombs for the Arden family, forebears of William Shakespeare, alongside notable Victorian glass and an 1891 pipe organ rebuilt in 1967. A raised stone structure with a cross-shaped immersion font was installed in 2008.
