About St Paul's Church
St Paul’s Church is an active Church of England parish church in Hamstead, Birmingham, near the boundary with Sandwell. Standing on elevated ground west of Walsall Road, it looks across the former mining village. The Grade II listed church has a community hall nearby, while Hamstead War Memorial stands beside the building.
The present church developed from a mission established in 1865 closer to Hamstead village. Its foundation stone was laid in July 1891, and the completed building was consecrated by the Bishop of Lichfield in September 1892. William Davis designed it in the Decorated Gothic style, using red brick accented with Bath stone. The plan includes a nave, chancel, aisles and transepts on both sides. A separate parish was formed in 1894 from parts of Handsworth and Perry Barr. The adjoining Celtic wheel-cross memorial, funded by local contributions and erected in 1920, records 22 parish men killed during the First World War and is itself listed at Grade II.
