About St Matthew's
St Matthew’s is a Church of England parish church on Duddeston Manor Road in Birmingham, West Midlands. The Grade II listed building no longer contains a worship space: its remaining area for services was sold to Kensington Community Care (Gloucester) Ltd in 2020, and by 2025 none remained.
William Thomas of Leamington Spa designed the church, whose foundation stone was set in October 1839. The Bishop of Worcester consecrated it in October 1840. Established as a daughter church of St Peter and Paul’s, Aston, it was the first of five churches funded by the Birmingham Church Building Society. J. A. Chatwin installed galleries in 1866 to provide more seating, followed by restoration work in 1883. In 1994, the interior was reorganised for several uses, placing a 250-person worship space at the eastern end and creating offices and community facilities elsewhere.
