About St Mary the Virgin, Acocks Green
St Mary the Virgin serves Acocks Green in Birmingham, West Midlands, as an active Church of England parish church. It is a Grade II listed building, with regular services of Holy Communion and morning prayer.
Local residents began planning the church in 1864 as Acocks Green’s population grew and the area sought a parish separate from Yardley. The first sections opened for worship in 1866, and an independent parish followed in 1867. J. G. Bland designed the Gothic Revival building, drawing on Early English forms, while J. A. Chatwin added the chancel in 1894. Inside, red and yellow masonry defines the nave arcades, and the chancel has a timber barrel-vaulted ceiling. Notable fittings include an alabaster reredos, Devonshire marble altar steps and an east window designed by Edward Burne-Jones. Bombing in December 1940 destroyed the roof and original stained glass, leading to repairs that lowered the roof’s pitch and introduced larger clear windows.
