About St Mary's Church

St Mary’s Church is a Church of England parish church in Handsworth, Birmingham. Sometimes called Handsworth Old Church, it stands within ten acres of grounds beside Handsworth Park. The Grade II* listed building is particularly associated with leading figures of the Industrial Revolution, several of whom are buried or commemorated there.

A stone church was established on the site in about 1160. Parts of its compact Norman predecessor survive in the lower sandstone sections of the tower, although substantial rebuilding took place in 1820 and 1870. Monuments include recumbent figures of the Wyrley family, a memorial to Matthew Boulton and a marble statue of engineer James Watt by Francis Chantrey. Six bells were placed in the tower in 1701; after later additions and repairs, the full ring was recast in 1955. An organ installed in 1895 underwent several restorations, but no pipe organ is now used.
