About St Mary and St Ambrose
St Mary and St Ambrose is an Anglican parish church on Pershore Road in the Edgbaston area of Birmingham. It remains in parish use and has Grade II protection in recognition of its architectural and historic interest.
Julius Alfred Chatwin designed the church, which was constructed during 1897 and 1898. John Perone, then Bishop of Worcester, consecrated it on 28 September 1898. Augustus Gough-Calthorpe, the sixth Baron Calthorpe, donated the land. Construction cost £8,000, of which local parishioners provided £2,000; Misses Stokes, from the Hawthorns in Edgbaston, paid the remainder. The parish developed as an offshoot of St Bartholomew’s in Edgbaston. An organ made by J. W. Walker & Sons was installed when the building opened in 1898.
