St Luke’s, Gas Street Church is a Church of England place of worship at 39 Gas Street in Birmingham, West Midlands. Also known as Gas Street Central, it serves as the principal venue for a resourcing church connected with the Diocese of Birmingham and Holy Trinity Brompton. The building holds Grade II* listed status.
Originally a retort house, it was constructed beside the canal in 1822 for Birmingham’s earliest gasworks, where coal was heated without air to produce town gas. Alexander Smith designed the structure, whose distinctive roof combines iron trusses with rods made from wrought iron. The gasworks ceased operating fully in 1879. The building was restored in 1998–99 and acquired by the Church of England in 2014 for the Parish of St Luke’s. A later renovation created a main worship space for 450 people, together with a foyer, café and offices.
