About St Lazar's Church, Bournville
St Lazar's Church, Bournville is an Eastern Orthodox church in Birmingham, West Midlands. Dedicated to Prince Lazar of Serbia, it belongs to the Serbian Orthodox Church’s Eparchy of Britain and Ireland. Its associated cultural centre is included on Birmingham’s local list at Grade C.
Completed in 1968, the church was built for Yugoslav political refugees who settled in Britain after the Second World War, with assistance from the exiled Prince Tomislav of Yugoslavia. Serbian architect Dragomir Tadić worked with Bournville Village Trust on a design based on fourteenth-century Byzantine architecture and modelled on a Serbian church. Constructed from brick and stone, it has three pairs of bronze doors, a Serbian candelabrum and an interior without seating, in keeping with Orthodox custom. Frescoes cover the interior, including Christ Pantocrator in the dome, the Virgin Mary in the apse, and depictions of saints, apostles and major Christian feasts.
