About Birmingham Orthodox Cathedral
Birmingham Orthodox Cathedral is a Greek Orthodox cathedral in Summer Hill Terrace, Birmingham, West Midlands. It is dedicated to the falling asleep of the Virgin Mary and to Saint Andrew. The Grade II listed church remains a place of Orthodox worship and is also home to a school teaching Greek language and culture to adults and children.
Julius Alfred Chatwin designed the brick building in 1873 for a Catholic Apostolic congregation. Its Gothic Revival design draws on early medieval English architecture, with a spacious oblong nave, an apse at either extremity and side passages threaded among the external supports. The interior features weighty masonry arcades carried on robust pillars, upper-level windows and a tall vaulted roof. At the western end, decorative brick patterns surround a large opening into the baptistery. Birmingham’s Greek Orthodox community began using the building in 1958, with Father Nicodemos Anagnostou serving as its first resident priest. Cathedral status followed in 1980, and restoration work has continued from about 2000.
