About St John's Church and the Narthex Centre
St John's Church and the Narthex Centre is an active Church of England parish church on St Johns Road in Sparkhill, Birmingham. Its congregation reflects the area’s ethnic and religious diversity, with Sunday worship at 10.30am and a monthly service for all ages. Armenian Christians and Persian-speaking worshippers also gather there. The Grade II listed church houses the Narthex Sparkhill charity, which received a national award for voluntary service in 2016.
Martin and Chamberlain, a Birmingham architectural practice, designed the building, which was completed in 1888 at Sparkhill’s highest point. The exterior presents a nineteenth-century form of Early English Gothic, while modern engineering methods for the period enabled an unusually spacious internal layout. Following the 1990 closure of Emmanuel Church in Sparkbrook, a section of that church’s parish became part of the parish here.
