About St James' Church
St James' Church is a Church of England parish church in Aston, Birmingham, in the West Midlands. It continues to serve as the parish church for the area.
The church began in 1891 as a mission associated with the Church of SS Peter and Paul in Aston. A purpose-built church designed by architect J. A. Chatwin followed in 1906 and was consecrated on 2 November that year by Charles Gore, then Bishop of Birmingham. Chatwin’s building was later demolished and replaced in 1981 with a church designed by G. Winteringham. After fire damage in 2001, the replacement building was restored and reopened. The 1906 church once contained a three-manual Conacher pipe organ made in Sheffield, but this instrument is no longer present.
