About St James' Church

St James' Church is a Church of England parish church in Handsworth, Birmingham, within the Anglican Diocese of Birmingham. It stands near Holyhead Road, at the junction of St James Road and Crocketts Road. Worship follows the Liberal High Church tradition, and the parish was formed from St Mary’s parish in 1854.

The church was first constructed between 1838 and 1840 on a site donated by John Crockett, who owned the neighbouring New Inns Hotel. A chancel was added in 1878, followed by an extensive rebuilding in 1895 to plans by Julius Alfred Chatwin. This work introduced a new nave, chancel and southern aisle. Earlier parts were reassigned as the northern aisle and chapel, while the original west tower became the north-west tower. Chatwin’s red-brick details and Decorated Gothic treatment contrast with the stone-built Early English character of the older fabric.
