About St Cyprian's Church, Hay Mills
St Cyprian’s Church, Hay Mills serves an Anglican parish in Birmingham’s West Midlands. Located south of the A45, close to the Fordrough and the Webster & Horsfall works, it remains linked to the Horsfall family, who funded its construction and still own it. Dedicated to Cyprian, a third-century Carthaginian bishop and martyr, the church is protected at Grade II.
The congregation first worshipped in a former schoolroom dating from 1860. Work on a larger building started in 1873, with that chapel retained to form the chancel, and consecration followed in 1878. Frank Barlow Osborn designed the red-brick Gothic Revival church, which has restrained black-brick accents, stone trim and tiled roofing. Its notable elements include a timber hammer-beam structure above the nave, slender side aisles, a south-west entrance tower and a slate-covered spire. The organ dates from 1869, while the tower houses a reused tannery bell cast in 1749. Hardman & Co created the stained glass, and a memorial chapel holds burials of the Horsfall family.
