About St Benedict's
St Benedict’s is an active Church of England parish church on Burlington Road in Birmingham, approximately four kilometres from the city centre. Dating from 1909, it is protected as a Grade II listed building, a designation granted in 1982.
A corrugated-iron mission chapel, opened by St Oswald’s in Small Heath during 1898, preceded the permanent structure. Local architectural practice Nicol and Nicol created the Byzantine Revival design, combining red brickwork with contrasting red sandstone. Rounded arcades of five bays separate the nave from its northern and southern aisles, while an image of Benedict of Nursia occupies a recess over the porch entrance. Henry Holiday decorated the curved sanctuary with Christ enthroned, accompanied by angels and saints, between 1912 and 1919. The chancel’s northern aisle houses an earlier organ made in Birmingham by C. H. Windridge during 1894–95. Conacher of Sheffield adapted it around 1920; it includes 22 stops, three keyboards and a pedalboard.
