About St Augustine's Church

St Augustine’s Church is an active Church of England parish church in Edgbaston, Birmingham. Dedicated to Augustine of Hippo, it occupies a prominent position within the conservation area named after it and is protected as a Grade II* listed building. The churchyard contains Edgbaston War Memorial, a separate Grade II listed structure commemorating local people who died in the two world wars.

Built to serve Edgbaston’s growing nineteenth-century population, the church was designed by J. A. Chatwin following a competition. Its nave, aisles and chancel were consecrated in 1868, while the 185-foot tower and spire followed in 1876. The Geometric Gothic interior includes Hardman stained glass, extensive carving by John Roddis and a painted chancel roof depicting imagery from Revelation. Other features include a Last Supper reredos inspired by Leonardo da Vinci, seasonal carvings on the nave capitals and a Hill organ later altered by Rothwell and Nicholson. A Lady chapel was formed before the Second World War, followed by a new baptistry in 1964 and a narthex in 1968.
