About St Andrew's
St Andrew’s was a Church of England parish church in Bordesley, Birmingham, in the West Midlands. It no longer stands, having been demolished in 1985. Its name survives locally in St Andrew’s Road, St Andrew’s Street and Birmingham City Football Club’s nearby ground.
Henry Pepys, Bishop of Worcester, laid the foundation stone on 23 July 1844 and consecrated the church on 30 September 1846. Designed by Richard Cromwell Carpenter in the Decorated Gothic style, it was funded by the Birmingham Church Building Society and was the final church built by that organisation. Contemporary church architecture commentators praised its carefully ordered plan. A storm damaged the spire in 1894, but repairs were delayed amid a dispute between the vicar and churchwardens; restoration was completed in 1901. The church contained an organ made by Banfield in 1849 and later altered by Albert Keates. St Oswald’s Church in Small Heath was subsequently formed from its parish.
