About St Agatha's
St Agatha’s is an active Church of England parish church on Stratford Road in Sparkbrook, Birmingham. Designed by William Bidlake, it is protected as a Grade I listed building. The church has maintained an Anglo-Catholic tradition since its earliest years and remains open for worship, with its priest also serving St Barnabas’ in Balsall Heath.
Construction began in 1899, using brick with stone detailing, and the church was consecrated in 1901. Its font, single bell and an 1805 foundation stone came from Christ Church in New Street, whose former site helped fund the building. Bombing destroyed the sanctuary in 1940, while a fire removed the whole roof in 1957. A seven-panel east window by Leonard Evetts was added in 1961, showing Christ in heaven among angels and saints, with St Agatha praying below. Extensive restoration between 2002 and 2005 included work to secure the tower. The church also contains a restored three-manual Nicholson organ.
