About Church of the Ascension
Located on School Road in Birmingham’s Hall Green area, the Church of the Ascension is an active Anglican parish church within the Church of England. Formerly called Hall Green Chapel and the Job Marston Chapel, it became Hall Green’s parish church in 1907. The building has held Grade II* listed status since 1952.
Completed and consecrated in 1704, the church is attributed to architect William Wilson. Local resident Job Marston contributed £1,000 towards its construction near Hall Green Hall. Its Queen Anne design uses red brick with stone detailing, including Doric pilasters, moulded window surrounds and a balustrade. The west tower rises to an eight-sided brick stage crowned by a copper cupola, while the nave has a curved plaster ceiling and three round-headed windows on either side. The chancel and transepts were added from 1860 to 1866. It is Birmingham’s oldest surviving church built in the classical tradition.
