About Church of St Oswald
The Church of St Oswald in Small Heath, Birmingham, is a former Church of England parish church. Now used as a preparatory school, the building is recognised for its architectural importance with Grade II* listed status. Its former parish was later united with St Aidan’s Church and renamed All Saints.
William Bidlake designed the church, which was constructed in 1892–93 and consecrated on 27 September 1893. Established as a mission of St Andrew’s in Bordesley, it was extended in 1899–1900. Notable fittings include a 1916 altarpiece by Sidney Meteyard and George Latham’s carved figure of St Oswald. Bidlake also designed the Arts and Crafts vicarage on Dora Road. The church received an 1846 two-manual pipe organ made by William Hill, transferred from St Peter’s Church in Handsworth.
