About Christ Church

Christ Church serves an Anglican parish in Yardley Wood, within Birmingham and the West Midlands. It continues in use as a Church of England church and has Grade II protection. Its parish came into being in 1849, using districts formerly belonging to St Edburgha’s, Yardley, and St Nicolas’, Kings Norton.

Construction was financed by Sarah Taylor of Moor Green, with Arthur Edward Perkins responsible for the design. The first stone was set in place on 14 April 1848, before the Bishop of Worcester dedicated the completed building on 28 March 1849. Its tower at the western end followed in 1896. The interior includes wooden panelling and carvings that the Earl of Denbigh had donated to St Bartholomew’s, Birmingham. They were brought here following the wartime destruction of that building. A J. W. Walker barrel organ, transferred from St Mary’s, Moseley, was subsequently altered or replaced by Halmshaw and Conacher; it has since been removed.
