About Christ Church

Christ Church serves the Summerfield district of Birmingham as an active Anglican parish. It is a Grade II listed building and has a congregation spanning different age groups and ethnic backgrounds. Sunday morning services take place weekly, with separate activities provided for children and teenagers.

Julius Alfred Chatwin designed the building in the Perpendicular architectural tradition, and construction took place during 1883–85. In November 1883, the first stone was placed by the widow of George Lea, who was vicar at St George’s, Edgbaston. The church opened for worship following its consecration on 30 April 1885. Its original parish territory came from St John’s in Ladywood; a portion was reassigned to St Augustine’s, Edgbaston, during 1906. An organ made by Nicholson and Co was added in 1889.
