About Church Of The Holy Name

Church Of The Holy Name is an active Roman Catholic parish in Jesmond, Newcastle upon Tyne. The church occupies the corner of North Jesmond Avenue and Mitchell Avenue. Within the Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle, the parish is assigned to the St Andrew and St Anthony deanery and the Newcastle and North Tyneside episcopal area. About 200 regular parishioners attend, chiefly at weekends.

Established in December 1901, the parish initially worshipped in a rented property on Manor House Road. A prefabricated iron chapel opened on St George’s Terrace in January 1903 and remained in use for almost three decades. Building work for the permanent church commenced in June 1928, with completion following in 1929 and room provided for 400 people. Inside are stained-glass windows displaying a range of artistic approaches. Four panels beyond the sanctuary portray eight saints, among them Thomas More, Margaret Clitheroe, Michael, John Fisher and Cuthbert carrying Oswald’s head.
