About St John's Church
St John’s Church is an Anglican place of worship on Gateshead’s Church Road, in the Sheriff Hill area of Tyne and Wear. Situated on the highest ground in the town, it continues to serve as a parish church in the Durham diocese. The building has Grade II protection for its historic and architectural importance.
Parliamentary measures in 1809 reserved land for the project, while the Church Building Commission provided £1,000 towards the expense. John Ions drew up the design, and the first stone was set in May 1824. Construction finished the following year, with consecration taking place on 30 August 1825 after expenditure of £2,742. Gothic Revival in character, the church uses finely dressed stone beneath a Welsh slate covering. It comprises a main worship space, a modest chancel and a spired tower at the western end. Pointed windows run along the walls. Meeting rooms, a kitchen and toilets were formed at the back in the 1990s, and a Harrison and Harrison organ arrived in 2000.
