About Church of Holy Cross, Ryton
The Church of Holy Cross, Ryton is an active Anglican parish church serving Ryton, within the borough of Gateshead in Tyne and Wear. It belongs to the Church of England and has Grade I listed status, recognising its special historical and architectural significance.
The church originated around 1220 and is considered the earliest surviving building in Ryton. A notable element of its medieval design is the broach spire, which was constructed during the thirteenth century and reaches a height of 36 metres. Among its historic furnishings is an effigy made from Frosterley marble, also dating to the thirteenth century, which represents a deacon carrying a book. Former rectors include Thomas Secker, subsequently Archbishop of Canterbury, and Charles Thorp, who became Durham University’s inaugural warden.
