About Church of St Chad

The Church of St Chad serves the Church of England parish in Bensham, within Gateshead, Tyne and Wear. It has Grade II* protection and forms a recognisable landmark, including for passengers travelling nearby by rail. The parish belongs to Gateshead Deanery and participates in Churches Together. Its outlook is described as liberal, with worship and theology shaped by the Oxford Movement. Since the 1990s, a screened section at the nave’s west end has accommodated a project for children and families.

Construction started in 1900 as Bensham changed from countryside into a densely housed district for workers, and consecration followed in 1903. William Searle Hicks produced the design, bringing Arts and Crafts ideas together with Decorative and Perpendicular Gothic forms. Sandstone was used for the structure, with green slate from Westmorland covering the roof. An eight-sided tower stands over the crossing and is illuminated after dark. Notable craftsmanship includes carved timber by Ralph Hedley, silver altar pieces made by William Bainbridge Reynolds, and glazing credited to Caroline Townshend and Laurence Walker. The roof received repairs in 2016 and again in 2021.
