About St Edmund's

St Edmund’s stands on High Street in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear. Dedicated to Edmund the Martyr, it serves as an active Anglican parish church within the Diocese of Durham. The church has been used for parish worship since 1980 and holds Grade I listed status, recognising its exceptional historic importance.

Built during the first half of the 13th century, between about 1200 and 1250, the chapel was founded by Nicholas Farnham, then Bishop of Durham. It initially served as a hospital for pilgrims. After the monasteries were dissolved, the building deteriorated, but was subsequently restored by the architect John Dobson. In 1950, the chapel and the adjoining Trinity Centre were jointly designated at Grade I.
