About All Saints Church, Wordwell
All Saints Church, Wordwell is an Anglican church no longer used for regular worship, situated in Wordwell, Suffolk, near the B1106 linking Bury St Edmunds with Brandon. It is protected at Grade I and now cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust.
The church originated around 1100 and combines Norman fabric with later Decorated Gothic windows. Flint rubble walls are finished with freestone details, beneath tiled roofing, while the southern porch is wooden. The compact arrangement includes nave and chancel, with a bellcote over the western end. Both rounded Norman doorways show Saxon influence: their carved tympana depict beasts, foliage and figures possibly associated with Saints Catherine and Lawrence. Inside are a Norman chancel opening and round font. Medieval seating from the fifteenth century has poppyhead finials and carvings that include boars and hybrid creatures. Samuel Sanders Teulon directed extensive restoration from 1857 to 1866, renewing several external elements, roofs and furnishings.
