About St Peter and St Paul's Church, Lavenham
St Peter and St Paul's Church, Lavenham is an active Anglican parish church in Lavenham, near Sudbury, Suffolk. Protected at Grade I, it is especially significant as a medieval church shaped by the town’s prosperous cloth industry and for its accomplished Late Perpendicular Gothic form.
Worship on this site dates back to Anglo-Saxon times, with an early timber building probably preceding the fourteenth-century stone structure. The chancel was completed around 1340, while the east vestry followed in about 1440. Most of the church was reconstructed from 1485 to 1525, supported by affluent cloth-trading families and the Earl of Oxford. Heraldic devices belonging to the Spring and de Vere families decorate the building, including the tower, begun in 1486. Interior details include five fifteenth-century misericords, medieval screens, a weathered octagonal font and memorials from the fifteenth to seventeenth centuries. Francis Penrose oversaw a substantial Victorian restoration between 1861 and 1867.
