About St Mary the Virgin's Church, Stonham Parva
St Mary the Virgin’s Church, Stonham Parva is a former Anglican place of worship near Stowmarket in Suffolk, about ten miles north of Ipswich and west of the A140. Now maintained by the Churches Conservation Trust, it is protected as a Grade I listed building.
The nave and chancel were built in the 14th century, around 1350, followed by substantial alterations during the early 1500s and restoration by E. F. Bishopp in the 19th century. Mostly plastered rubble with freestone detailing, the church has an exposed flint tower and Perpendicular additions including the clerestory and south chapel. Inside are a six-bay double hammerbeam nave roof, carved angels in the chancel roof, an ornate 15th-century limestone font and an early 18th-century west gallery. Other features include Queen Anne’s royal arms, a memorial to Gilbert Mouse dated 1622, a 1929 organ by J. Rayson and Son, and five bells, the earliest cast around 1490.
