About St Mary's Church, Badley
St Mary’s Church, Badley, is a former Anglican place of worship in Suffolk, roughly three miles south-east of Stowmarket. Set west of the B1113 and accessible by a long track, it is preserved by the Churches Conservation Trust and has Grade I listed status.
Surviving elements date to around 1200, notably the southern doorway and a narrow chancel window, though the present structure is largely fifteenth-century. Its walls are chiefly rubble flint, partly covered with render, and its tiled roof dates from the early 1500s. The tower mixes flint and brick, with an orange-brick upper section renewed in the sixteenth century. Furnishings include a Purbeck marble font from the 1200s, carved medieval seating, later box pews containing reused screen panels, and numerous monuments commemorating the Poley family. A plain seventeenth-century pulpit, iron communion rails and a five-stop Bevington organ also remain.
