About St Edmund's Church, Southwold
St Edmund’s Church, Southwold is an active Church of England parish church in the Suffolk coastal town. Dedicated to St Edmund, it is protected as a Grade I listed building and reflects Southwold’s prosperity and importance during the later medieval period.
Construction began in the 1430s and continued until the 1490s, replacing a smaller thirteenth-century church lost to fire. The building is distinguished by intricate East Anglian flushwork, with patterned flintwork particularly prominent on its 96-foot tower. Inside, notable features include an extensive medieval rood screen, a fifteenth-century clock figure known as Southwold Jack, and a decorated font cover. Much of the medieval glazing was destroyed in 1644, while further windows were lost when a bomb struck nearby during the Second World War. Later additions include east windows by Ninian Comper and an engraved window showing St Edmund by John Hutton. The church has eight bells, and its roof was renewed in lead in 2015.
