About St Andrew's Church, Walberswick

St Andrew’s Church, Walberswick, is an active Church of England parish church near Southwold in Suffolk. Dating from 1426, it is recognised as a Grade I listed building. The parish belongs to the Sole Bay Team Ministry, which brings it together with seven neighbouring parishes.

The church retains an impressive tower from the 15th century. Its earlier form included a nave, chancel, aisles on both sides and a clerestory extending across eighteen bays. As the village became less prosperous, maintaining such a large building proved unaffordable. During the 1690s, the parish received approval to dismantle much of it and construct a smaller church, financed by selling roof lead and the tower bells. The present building stands amid the remains of its predecessor. A two-manual organ was fitted around 1959 and occupies the chancel.
