About St Mary's Church, Redgrave

St Mary’s Church, Redgrave stands on elevated ground roughly a kilometre east of Redgrave village in Suffolk. Formerly the local Church of England parish church, it is now redundant and cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust. The building is listed at Grade I.

Built chiefly between about 1280 and 1350, the church was enlarged during the 15th century, with a vestry added in the late 1500s. Its mainly Decorated design incorporates flint rubble, dressed stone, brick and flushwork. The tall west tower dates from the 16th century and received new facing in the late 1700s. Inside are a medieval hammerbeam nave roof, an octagonal 14th-century font and monuments associated principally with the Bacon, Holt and Wilson families. Other features include stained glass installed in 1853, an organ made in 1889 and six bells, five cast in 1736 and another added in 1785.
